The seed that grew into Blue Legacy Estate Services was planted in 2017, following the passing of my mom and father-in-law just eight days apart. Experiencing the emotional and logistical stress of managing both estates firsthand gave me a deep understanding of what families go through during such difficult times. While my mom’s affairs were relatively simple, as the youngest of six children, I found myself overseeing everything—from final arrangements to cleaning out her apartment. Even with a straightforward estate, the weight of the loss made the process profoundly challenging.
My experience with my father-in-law’s passing was quite the opposite. The immediate focus was ensuring care and support for my mother-in-law. Although he had four children, my background and familiarity with the process positioned me to handle the logistical side, while the others concentrated on their mother’s well-being. Realistically, managing both roles would have been overwhelming for any one person. In settling his affairs, I found myself navigating the Veterans Administration, the State of Massachusetts for pension matters, Social Security, multiple life insurance companies, and more. The process was incredibly time-consuming—and even today, one piece of it remains unresolved.
When I reflect on 2017, I often wonder how I managed the logistics while grieving myself. It was during that time I came to a powerful realization: the countless “little things” that accumulate after a loved one’s passing quickly become a mountain of work—physically, mentally, and emotionally overwhelming for most people. I also recognized that many of these responsibilities fell outside the scope of the professionals we were working with. That experience made it clear to me that there was a real need for a service focused on bridging that gap—supporting families with the practical side of loss during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
